Burlington County, New Jersey
Founded in 1677, The City of Burlington was once the capital of West Jersey. Then, travel to the Industrial Village of Smithville in Eastampton or visit the majesty of Batsto Village nestled in the Pinelands. Burlington County offers a glimpse of the founding of our nation, the war for its independence through the industrial revolution and much, much more.
Often called the “Cradle of Emancipation”, no other county in New Jersey has a richer black historical presence than Burlington County. Tour underground railroad sites, Quaker meeting houses, historic sites on the state and national registers, one-room schoolhouses, learn of notable women in history who had a major impact on society, or visit the Historic Prison Museum, once home to the Boston Strangler. The newly opened Rancocas Pointe and Newton’s Landing Trails wind along the Rancocas Creek and are the first sections to be completed in a system-wide trail network.
