Burlington County, New Jersey

1 DSCN0248 1024x

Founded in 1677, The City of Burlington was once the capital of West Jersey. Then, travel to the Industrial Village of Smithville in Eastampton or visit the majesty of Batsto Village nestled in the Pinelands. Burlington County offers a glimpse of the founding of our nation, the war for its independence through the industrial revolution and much, much more.

Often called the “Cradle of Emancipation”, no other county in New Jersey has a richer black historical presence than Burlington County. Tour underground railroad sites, Quaker meeting houses, historic sites on the state and national registers, one-room schoolhouses, learn of notable women in history who had a major impact on society, or visit the Historic Prison Museum, once home to the Boston Strangler. When it comes to our nations past, Burlington County has more to explore.

Historic Attractions: View architecture from colonial times, the industrial revolution through modern day. Stroll through quaint downtowns and main streets, offering unique shopping.

With more than 1,000 acres of developed parkland, 3,500 acres of land slated for park development, and a regional trail system that will provide a link between the parks, the residents of Burlington County can enjoy natural settings, recreational water access, picnic facilities, and play areas that are close to home.

The newly opened Rancocas Pointe and Newton’s Landing Trails wind along the Rancocas Creek and are the first sections to be completed in a system-wide trail network. The Annex Art Gallery at Smithville Mansion regularly hosts art exhibits, and additional gallery space is currently under construction.

Preserving Burlington County heritage and making history come alive through its parks system is a key mission of the Board of Chosen Freeholders. Preservation and restoration work at Historic Smithville Park will provide visitors with a window into the Industrial Revolution, and the Historic Prison Museum, a National Historic Landmark, tells an intriguing story of early American architecture and prison life.
